In the USA, as in many other countries around the world, anabolic steroids have always been very popular. However, in most countries, they were included into the group of prohibited substances, for example, in the United States, a special law was adopted for this purpose.

Why are anabolics illegal?

Why are steroids illegal? In the period of their development and for several tens of years afterwards, all steroids were qualified as medicines. Only one person was allowed to issue a permit for their purchase - an attending physician, who also was engaged in determining dosages and monitoring the patient. The boom in the popularity growth of steroids was observed from the very beginning, even from the time of their creation in 1935. It was then that testosterone was synthesized. By the end of the sixties, the use of steroids in the sports environment, especially among power athletes and bodybuilders, had become an ordinary practice. The reaction did not take long to wait, and as early as in 1975, the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee put anabolic steroids into the list of drugs banned for use. The first tests for the use of steroids were introduced almost immediately, in 1976 at the Olympic Games in Montreal. However, even this did not stop the athletes from continuing to take steroid substances: in 1988, an outstanding athlete, short-distance runner Ben Johnson, lost the gold medal he had won after passing the steroid test. Subsequently, the athlete received a lifetime disqualification, the reason for this was another positive steroid test in 1993.

Side effects as a cause of the prohibition of anabolic steroids

How do steroids work? They mimic the effect of some hormones. The use of steroids suppresses the natural production of hormones by the body. The body will try to restore its normal hormonal level, but a disorder or increase in the amount of natural hormones leads to various physiological and mental problems. Steroids do have a wide range of side effects. Obviously, drugs that are on the list of banned steroids are really dangerous, to some extent. All this is a long-established fact. For example, steroids contribute to the development of gynecomastia (an abnormal increase in breast size in men). It is believed that the appearance of acne is associated with an increase in the concentration of free testosterone. There are many other side effects of steroids.

Side effects of steroidal drugs in women

Many women use anabolic steroids to increase productivity, improve muscle growth and strength. Most side effects of anabolic steroids in women are identical to those in men. However, there are also "additional" ones:

  • a growth of hair on the face;
  • male pattern baldness;
  • coarsening of the voice;
  • reduction in the breast size;
  • infertility.

In addition, anabolic steroids can cause menstrual irregularities and clitoral enlargement.
